Shepard Fairey is one of today’s most influential street artists. He first gained fame as a graffiti artist in the late 80’s with his OBEY Giant sticker campaign. But he is most well known for his HOPE poster of Barack Obama. He made this for the 2008 presidential election. But his success has also brought along many legal problems. The debate was over who owns public images and how they can be used. It has caused a lot of controversy between the Associated Press and Fairey. But all the attention has madeim a very popular designer. Today he works out of his studio, Studio Number One in Los Angeles. Fairey focuses on using political figures and people from pop culture in his work. He also addresses issues like war, privacy , rascism, and the environment among many others. Many of his work is on display at the Smithsonian, and the Museum of Modern Art. His work is very popular and always sell out quickly. Shepard Fairey remains to be one of the most controversial, but popular graphic artists in the United States.
